Lesson Objectives :

• Students can name the communities they feel a sense of belonging to, recognizing the importance of community.

• Students can represent their chosen community through a drawing, highlighting what/who makes that community important to them.

Lesson Description :

Students will be strengthening their drawing skills through this project, in which they will create and draw a representation of their chosen community, focusing on aspects of their community that make them feel safe/heard/welcomed. This may be a physical community, like the town or city they live in, or a cultural community or community of interest like the LGBTQ+ community, a faith community, or a hobby community.

The project will encourage students to reflect on their community in a positive light and think about the unique ways of connecting with other humans and finding a sense of belonging they experience. They will create a scene in which their community is the focal point, using text somewhere within the piece, drawing at least one figure, and highlighting element that makes their community unique. They may use any drawing material of their choice. They must use color or do the piece in full gray-scale (no line work drawings).
